WHAT TO EXPECT AT OUR SURF CAMP

An immersive surf experience built with heart, connection, and world-class waves. Located in the heart of one of the world’s most wave-rich regions, this surf camp offers more than just unforgettable surf sessions. It’s a family-style, an authentically captivating journey. From shared meals to sunset surfs and bonfires, each moment feels like it was made just for you—real, meaningful, and full of soul.

Built and Run with Heart

The Point was built from the ground up by us: Laia, Ivan & Edgar—with the vision of creating a space that feels like home. As the owners, we live here, run the camp ourselves, and welcome every guest as if they were longtime friends. We’re hands-on in every aspect, from guiding the surf to sharing meals and stories, always aiming to make your experience unforgettable. This isn’t an Airbnb or a hands-off stay—it’s a place built and run with care by those who are part of it every day. Guests naturally fall into the rhythm of camp life, where surfing, sharing meals, and relaxing together come easy.

What Makes This Surf Camp Special

What makes it truly unique is the feeling—you arrive as a guest, but leave as part of a family. There’s no staff hidden behind the scenes. Everyone here, from your surf guide to the person cooking your meals, is part of the same community experience. It’s personal, warm, and real. And of course, the location speaks for itself—uncrowded waves, raw nature, and the rare chance to reach world-class breaks by land, not just by boat.

Surf Experiences, your way

At The Point, we believe in freedom and local insight. Most guests explore and surf on their own, but we’re always here to point you in the right direction. Ivan’s deep knowledge of the area means you’ll know where to surf, what to expect, and what to avoid—whether it’s chasing the best conditions or staying safe. If you’d like more support, you can hire Ivan as a surf guide to help you read the waves and level up your surfing with tailored advice in the water.

Fresh, Flavorful Meals Daily

Meals are prepared with care, creativity, and culinary skill. Served family-style, they’re always plentiful, delicious, and a highlight of each day—bringing everyone together around the table in a shared celebration of good food and good company.

Connection to Local Culture

Set beside a vibrant village and fully staffed by locals, the camp offers a genuine connection to Mentawai life. From everyday interactions to occasional village gatherings, you’ll get a natural glimpse into the culture. Whether it’s sharing stories, joining a celebration, or simply enjoying the warm hospitality, the experience is rooted in respect and real connection.

Movement & Wellness

To keep your body feeling strong, balanced, and ready for the next wave, Hollow Tree’s Resort offers access to an open gym and a variety of fitness classes through @mentawai.surf.fitness. These optional paid add-ons are designed to help surfers maintain peak performance throughout their stay. Whether you’re looking to warm up before a surf session, recover after time in the water, or stay conditioned for consistent performance, their open gym and expert-led yoga and fitness classes are the perfect complement to your surf adventure.

A Surf Experience That Feels Like Home

It’s more than just the waves—you’ll share meals, laughter, and moments you’ll never forget.Guests often arrive as visitors and leave as part of something much bigger—a community of surf lovers who value authenticity, connection, and the beauty of a life lived close to the sea.

Many guests arrive expecting a great surf trip and end up experiencing something far more meaningful. With many adventures, surf sessions, incredible food, and real connection to the local culture, this camp offers a surf experience that’s both high-quality and deeply personal. It’s not an Airbnb or a hands-off stay—this is a place built and run by those who live here, who guide the surf, prepare the meals, and share the experience alongside you every day.

It’s no surprise why many choose to extend their stay. Once you’re here, you’ll quickly understand why!

A GLIMPSE INTO THE MENTAWAI TRIBE

Although the Mentawai people don’t live on Sipora Island, you can easily visit them on nearby Siberut Island—just a short interferry ride away. We’re happy to help organize a guided tour for guests who want to experience this unforgettable cultural journey.

The Mentawai are one of Indonesia’s oldest indigenous tribes, known for their deep spiritual connection to nature and strong sense of community. They live in traditional longhouses called uma, built from wood, bamboo, and palm leaves, and share everything as a community. Their way of life revolves around the forest—hunting, fishing, gathering, and small-scale farming using tools handmade from natural materials.

Their beliefs are rooted in animism and shamanism, with shamans (sikerei) playing a vital role in healing, rituals, and keeping balance with the spirit world. Tattoos are also an important part of their identity, each one telling a story of their life and connection to nature.

When visiting the tribe, you can expect to:

  • Trek through the jungle
  • Learn traditional hunting and fishing techniques
  • Cook with the locals
  • Watch or participate in cultural rituals
  • Try fire-making and other survival skills
  • Simply slow down and live as they do—off the grid and in tune with nature

We recommend spending 3 to 5 days with the Mentawai to truly appreciate their unique way of life. It’s more than just a trip—it’s a chance to connect with a culture that lives in harmony with the land.
